Track 152 on The Playlist.
Merrill Garbus is just one drop in an ocean of indie musicians who loop. The live building of a song with a loop pedal probably doesn’t deserve to strike awe into listeners like it once did (how many of us didn’t have a special moment with KT Tunstall in ’05?) but here it’s exciting again.
The brash style tUnE-yArDs invent on new album W H O K I L L intermeshes aspects of r&b, hip-hop, rock and what-have-you with stabs of dissonance and complex beat patterns. Way too easily it could seem haphazard, but to see ‘You Yes You’ built from scratch shows just how cleverly crafted it all is. In performance, Garbus’ loops add a sheen of fresh fascination to the bloody violence of her record.
